What to Do in a Motor Vehicle Collision

What to do immediately after a motor vehicle collision:

Dealing with motor vehicle accidents can be stressful, therefore it is important that you keep calm and know your rights. Here are some tips on what to do if you have been involved in a motor vehicle collision:

  • First, get to a safe location (if you can move the vehicle to a safe location) and check for any injuries that you or the passengers in the vehicle might have.
  • Second, if you see someone that requires medical attention, dial 911 immediately. The police should be called regardless of whether there was an injury if there was property damage to the vehicles.
  • Third, you should collect all information from the other party involved in the collision. The police will get this information once they are called. If you are hurt and require immediate medical attention, take an ambulance. Do not worry about getting this information as the police officer will get this information.
  • Fourth, tell the officer exactly what happened from your point of view. Do not admit to the incident being your fault even if you assume it was.
  • Fifth, take pictures of the damage on your and the other vehicle involved in the collision.
  • Sixth, you should call your insurance company and tell them everything that has happened. They will give you a claim number. Write that number down.
  • Finally, if after the motor vehicle collision, you or anyone you know has been injured in the collision, especially if there is permanent injury, you should contact our office as soon as possible. Our attorneys will be able to protect the person’s interests and ensure they get the medical coverage needed as soon as possible.

If the other vehicle’s insurance company contacts you, do not give them any information and direct them to speak to your attorney.

There are specific time limits in New York State regarding motor vehicle collisions. So it is important you call right away!

Even if you think you might not need a car accident attorney, you should consider consulting one to get advice. The consultation is free and takes less than an hour!
